As I write this, tears are filling my eyes and I’m brought back to exactly where I was 9 years ago today. Everyone handles the loss of a loved one differently and for me, 7/17/06 will forever be a date that is burned into my head so vividly. Before that Monday, I had only experienced the loss of a few distant family members, but that day I lost one of the most important people in my life to date. Nanny. Prior to that Monday in July, we had made the drive from home in Sergeant Bluff to Texas numerous times and it always felt like it took so long to get there, but that day, it took what felt like an eternity. I can still see us pulling into Baylor Hospital and going up the elevator, walking the halls of the hospital floor, looking out the windows onto the parking lot, and getting the news. About the time we found out that Nanny went to Heaven, I was supposed to be playing 2nd base in the first round of the District Softball Tournament. I remember thinking that day was supposed to be a good day…not the worst day of my life so far. But, like in all things, life had to go on. Nanny was no longer in pain or enduring any more suffering.

White dresses can be intimidating. White tends to often be associated with all things bridal --Bachelorette Party dress & bridal showers & wedding gown--but as long as you steer clear of overly frilly frocks or obnoxiously lacey numbers, you're great. The color really should be treated a summer {and winter for that matter} staple for EVERYONE! I love how white can transition from day to night, work to play, and simple to dressy. While in Minneapolis last month I wandered into the Mall of America's Madewell store and saw this dress hanging on one of the mannequins. The grid print was the first thing that got my attention but the shape was what convinced me to try it on. As soon as I slipped it over my head I knew it was a keeper...plus I'm a sucker for any dress that has pockets! The thicker material, high-cut neckline, and knee-length silhouette make it a great pick for any occasion.
With the heat index hovering around 100* for the next few days, flannel is probably one of the last materials you're thinking about wearing...I can totally relate. MOST summer nights in the Midwest, though, cool off quite a bit once the sun goes down and a lightweight flannel is the perfect piece to cut the chill. They're great to tie around your waist or work well with the sleeves rolled up! If you haven't tried a Rails flannel, you are missing out. Their shirts are incredibly soft and have a super comfortable, slightly over-sized fit (I wear an XS). My collection of their flannels has slowly grown over the past year and this one commonly ends up sister's room. I'm thinking it may be time to give each of the 4 sisters a flannel this Christmas {shhh...don't tell them!}!
I have to be honest, July 9th had been circled/highlighted/marked-in-bold for some time on my planner and in my phone. Sure it may seem like a random summer Thursday to almost everyone, but to those who think Nordstrom can do no wrong (insert hand-raising emoji here!), this day marks the start of their Anniversary EARLY ACCESS Sale for anyone who is a Nordstrom card holder. One of my favorite things about being a card holder is that you're not restricted to JUST a credit card...they also offer a debit card version that syncs directly to your bank account, which is what I have. I love the debit option because I don't have to remember to make a credit card payment every month or worry about any interest charges. For the general public, access to these amazing deals begins July 17 and runs through August 3, or in the case of many popular items, until they're gone.
Much like my slower-than-most adoption of the midi skirt, my love for peplum tops has been nearly non-existent. Again I think it stems from my body type, but I've struggled over the past year(s) to find a version of the top that doesn't look totally ridiculous on me or make my torso look even shorter. Then, this cream eyelet peplum top from BCBG came along and {sort of--still warming to the idea of these} changed my mind. The combination of the intricate pattern, clean color, and 'small' peplum, detailing caught my eye and led me to take it in with me inside the Bloomingdale's dressing room. While it's a little (ok, quite a bit) more than I like to spend on tops, the quality of the material has proven to be worth the steeper price tag. I'm actually considering the addition of it's black counterpart to my closet now that it is on sale!
